Waking up to rain your wedding day in the colder months might feel like a huge bummer, but tradition has it that it is considered good luck! Many believe that rain brings fertility, cleansing, unity and renewal to your wedding day and marriage. The Hindus believe that a wet knot is harder to untie – meaning your marriage will be just as hard to unravel.
Nonetheless, no bride who doesn’t have a little panic attack at the thought of wet weather no matter how much good luck it can bring, but relax, we have you covered with our 5 tips on how to tackle a rainy day…
CALL YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER
Photographers have literally seen and dealt with it all – especially wet weather weddings. Discuss with them the possible indoor locations that you can shoot at close by, or if you’re brave, talk about the potential of having your images taken in the rain – do we need to remind you of the stunning shot below?
BUY PRETTY UMBRELLAS
There are so many umbrella choices out there; you just have to pick one! Don’t forget to purchase some for your bridesmaids as well as you do the dash from the car to the church. Rock a calm vibe and your best “I knew it was going to rain” face.
PAT, DAB, WATERPROOF + SMOOTH
It’s a huge possibility that you’re probably going to cry on your wedding day so it’s a given that ANY bride knows that waterproof mascara and liner are your wedding day best friend. You might also want to discuss with your hairdresser a second option hairstyle to avoid frizz – topknots, buns and braids always work well. Don’t forget your powder touch up before the reception and a smoothing hair serum to combat flyaways.
You’re a girl, we have all been there – the stiletto heel sinking into the grass situation – now add some water into the mix and your $$$$ wedding shoes will never stand a chance. A more relaxed bride might opt for the good old fun wellies in crazy patterns and colours to brighten up the day. If you’re a bride that MUST wear heels, then perhaps opt for a wedge instead or even a spare pair of shoes to do the dash from the car to inside then pop on your wedding shoes.
You can’t beat it and you can’t control Mother Nature in all her glory! Inform your guests that you WILL be going ahead with your wedding, it might be wet and cold, but it will be amazing nonetheless!!

THE COUPLE: Rachael + Donato
PALETTE: We went for neutral tones, with the bridesmaids and decor in hues of creams and whites while the boys wore deep navy suits with a black lapel, white shirt, black silk ties and black shoes.
We had the first really warm day in September, so for an outdoor ceremony, it was absolutely perfect. The day went off without a hitch, bar the standard downside of the day passing by way too quick. Hair and makeup in the morning was great, everyone was so relaxed, chilled and just excited for the day. But all of a sudden, the cars pulled up out the front and it was ‘go’ time!
It was really special to have both parents walk me down the aisle, with my dad proudly finishing the final handover to Donato waiting. The ceremony was beautiful, serious at moments but also incorporated a lot of fun, laughs and of course love. I truly felt our two families coming together, with my brothers and Donato’s niece and nephew all reading passages.
The reception space exceeded my expectations. Everything from the centrepieces and table décor, to the fairy light canopy and the cake, was simply perfect. Our centrepieces were a mixture of high and low table arrangements with gypsophila and white bud roses while the cake was 4 tiers white chocolate mud cake and latte sponge. We offered our guests pre dinner canapés on the terrace of the Hickenbotham Hall, followed by antipasto, choice of entrée which was char-grilled prawns or ravioli. Mains were choice of beef fillet with polenta or chicken with a speck fritter, sides of steamed vegetables and a garden salad. Dessert was individual citrus tarts served with wedding cake, followed by chocolates, coffee and tea. So there was certainly an abundance of food!
Entertainment was provided by a 3 piece band who kept our guests entertained all night. They set the scene beautifully for Donato and my first dance, which we shared in spotlight to Christina Perri’s A Thousand Years. I also shared a special moment with my Mum, when I surprised organised our song to play. My mum is one of the most important people in the world to me, more my best friend and the one I can turn to whenever for anything. So I wanted to make sure we had a moment together to let her know all that. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house though, when it came to the Father-Daughter dance. Unbeknown to Dad, I had organised the song for us to share to be one with emotional meaning- Anthony Callea’s version of The Prayer was one of his late father, my late Grandfathers favourite songs. And dad not knowing this, only added to the sentimental value the song already had. But then the most special moment of the entire day happened. For the last part of the song, Dad called Donato out onto the dance floor and gave me to him. It was so special as I had no idea. I am not typically an emotional person, but this really got me. We really couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day, filled with all our family friends and more love than we could ever ask for.
My husband and I dedicated the success of our special day to our loved ones missing, but smiling down from heaven

When it comes to wedding selections, it’s fair enough to say that there are some major make-or-break decisions involved. Before you and hubby-to-be sign across the dotted line and put down a deposit, there are some important questions that you may want to ask your wedding photographer…
1. How would you describe your wedding photography style?
Before you choose your wedding day photographer, make sure their style matches your desired look. A photographer that shoots candid, more traditional images probably wouldn’t suit a couple that were after artistic, photo journalistic styled images. Have a glance through their previous work and chat with them about what you were after to ensure you are the perfect fit for each other.
2. Have you ever photographed a wedding at [insert venue]?
If not, then perhaps a tour of the venue would be beneficial for your photographer so that they can get a feel for the space and figure out their best angles, hidden locations and spots to capture the perfect moments.
3. Do you have a list of shots?
If your photographer has complied a list of poses they would like to shoot you and hubby-to-be in, kindly ask for a copy to ensure that you are happy with the direction and feel.
4. How many hours will you be shooting? Is there an extra cost for extended hours?
Want to capture those memorable snaps of you and your bridesmaids getting 'wedding day ready'? Or perhaps it is vital to have the rocking late night dance floor on film? Discuss with your photographer what you would like captured on the day to come up with a reasonable shooting time line that fits within your budget. Your photographer will present a range of package options and even customise a package to suit you.
5. How many photographers are included?
With a second photographer at your wedding day, special moments can be captured from multiple locations and angles. You’ll have two different views and perspectives of everything that happens – more photos, more fun, more love! This is also a great idea when the bride may be getting ready in one hotel room and the groom is at another location… on the other side of town!
6. How many edited photos are included?
Discuss with your photographer how many images you would like to keep/purchase.
7. How long until they are ready?
It is important for you to confirm a timeframe of how long it will take the photographer to get your images back to you – especially if you need them for something special, like a Real Wedding submission to Brides of Adelaide.
8. How are the images provided?
Your options are endless - USB’s, disc, photo album, drop box etc.… Photographers offer incredible packages with some gorgeous keepsake pieces.
9. What happens in an emergency?
It is crucial you confirm with your photographer what steps will be taken if they were to fall violently ill or were unable to make the wedding. Is there a back-up photographer available?
10. How much?
Always work within your budget but remember, these photos are forever. They are a beautiful memento that you will look back on for years to come. Take your time, do your research, meet with your favourites and ensure you feel relaxed and comfortable with your chosen photographer/s. Trust us, this is one aspect of your wedding planning that is worth the extra time and spend!
