Marilyn Monroe introduced us to the expression ‘diamonds are a girl’s best friend’, but how do you choose a best friend? What characteristics do you look for? Choosing an engagement ring can be somewhat daunting when you don’t know what to look for. Imagine walking into a beautiful glistening store with hundreds of diamond rings staring back at you, all screaming out ‘pick me’. It’s important not to let that overwhelming feeling of excitement and nervousness take over. Take a deep breathe and enjoy yourself, this is a very special and joyful occasion for you both.
There are a few ways to shop for your dream engagement ring. Whether it is on your own, with friends and family or with your partner. On average, a woman will look at their engagement ring over one million times in her lifetime. So let’s help you choose your ideal ring. We have pin pointed a few key ideas to keep in mind when looking for that sparkling emblem of love.
Most soon-to-be brides consider 'design' to have a major influence on which engagement ring they choose. The most popular diamond shape is the Round Brilliant and ‘fancy shaped’ diamonds: the Princess Cut, Emerald, Cushion, Heart, Marquise, Oval and Pear. Your preference of shape completely depends on your personal style and what best suits your finger.
Before you walk into a jewelery store, it is handy to know what to look for in a diamond. When selecting a signature diamond, there are four characteristics of diamonds to consider known as the 4 C’s; carat, colour, clarity and cut. Diamond’s are a luxury indulgence and not everyone wants the biggest rock to sit upon their finger. Firstly, you must decide what is most important to you, the design, metal, carat weight, colour or clarity.
The precise shape and cut of a diamond’s facets is one of the most important factor’s when determining the beauty of a stone. To achieve a superlative cut, it is ideal to balance the brilliance, dispersion and scintillation of a diamond. A brilliant cut diamond allows light to be reflected back and intensifies light transmission. The ideal engagement ring has a diamond clear to the point of being colourless. Each stone is graded on a scale from ‘D’ (colourless) to ‘Z’ (saturated). A diamond graded ‘Z’ will have a light yellow colour but do not be fooled, Z graded diamonds are not considered a coloured gemstone.
Clarity measures the flawlessness of a diamond. It is extremely rare to find an absolutely flawless diamond, when setting a diamond into an engagement ring it is nearly impossible for the surface of the diamond to remain untouched. All diamonds are unique and rare, the clarity refers to the internal flaws (clouds, feathers, pinpoints) that are visible once under a 10-power magnification or external imperfections such as scratches, pits and nicks. The scale FL (flawless to I1-I3 Imperfect-eye-visible inclusions).
Some girls are born with glitter in their veins, but it’s true, not everyone wants a diamond engagement ring. From deep blue tranquil sapphires to passionate igniting rubies. Our beautiful planet produces natural minerals, deep within the earths crust, forming a beautifully diverse range of unique coloured gemstones to choose from.

Oval-cut diamonds are often overlooked, and all for the wrong reasons – the regal, rounded shaped elongates the finger whilst being bold and brilliant. An oval diamond can have the same carat weight as a round diamond, but with a bigger surface area! Voilà, your ring appears bigger… we definitely wouldn’t be apposing that. Oval diamonds are more rare than round and princess-cut diamonds… talk about a precious stone. If a diamond isn’t your style, moissanite and sapphire are also available in oval-cut. Here’s a little glitzy glam to get you through your Wednesday xxx

In light of our friends EverettBrookes’ fourth birthday, we couldn’t help but treat our eyes to a wistful gaze at some of the jeweller’s stunning white gold creations. It all comes down to personal taste and white gold is still a serious trend; the metal is fresh, versatile and flattering on all skin tones. After spending the morning making a shortlist of our favourite EverettBrookes wedding and engagement rings (not an easy task, mind you) we’ve decided we need to share them with you. What’s your favourite?
These diamond engagement rings are making our heart beat very, very quickly….The corner set princess cut with channel set princess cut stones on the shoulders will certainly make you the envy of your girlfriends. For a unique spin on a traditional ring, we love this brilliant cut diamond on a knife-edged style band! We think princess cut diamond wedding bands look stunning stacked on either side of an engagement ring and are in love with this opulent wedding ring with alternating princess and brilliant cut stones.
White gold is also increasingly popular for men, particularly with a masculine brushed finish. For a ring that is bang on trend, we adore this band with the rose gold inner.
